Biostatistician Skills Set

Master’s in Statistics or related field is essential. A PhD is generally required for senior positions. Strong SAS programming skill is important to become a successful Biostatistician. Positions are generally categorized by Level.

Level 1: This is an entry level position for candidates with a fresh Master’s or PhD degree without experience.

Level 2: Masters with experience of 3-5 years or PhD with 1 to 3 years’ experience.

Level 3: Masters with over 10 years’ experience or PhD with over 7 years’ experience.

In addition to good knowledge of statistics, awareness of ICH and FDA guidelines is useful in designing clinical trials and planning statistical analysis. Should be able to write SAS code for inferential analysis, and validating key TLGs and analysis datasets. Knowledge of SDTM and ADaM is important. Good statistician will ensure that all data captured in CRFs is summarized in the form of TLGs and all analyses planned in protocol are provided for CSR. Listings should include all data. Must work closely with data management, study Clinician and Medical   Writers. You may have to oversee the services provided by CROs.

Most positions of Biostatisticians require master’s degree in statistics or related field. A PhD is preferred or required for many senior positions.
