Statistical Programmers positions in pharma are also categorized by level. Some companies have position title as Principal Programmer. SAS positions generally require candidates with a bachelor degree in any Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Life Science or equivalent degree. Certification in base SAS and advance SAS and knowledge of SQL is helpful in programming efficiency.

Entry level SAS Programmer positions are limited in the industry. Self-learning of data manipulation, SAS functions, macros, ODS, and SAS graphs is the key to advance knowledge. One needs to work hard on learning and practice.

Senior Programmers are expected to be able to program and validate all TLGs of a clinical trial. Should be able to understand and use company proprietary SAS macros. Modification of existing SAS code from other studies in a compound is often needed. Skills in using additional software tools and applications such as MS office, XML, and R enhance capability. Good interpersonal, communication, writing and organizational skills are important.

Statistical SAS Programmers in pharma industry come from a wide range of qualifications in computer science, mathematics, social sciences, biological science, biomedical engineering, pharmacy, etc. along with strong SAS skills authenticated by certification programs of the SAS Institute.

Good communication skills, ability to work in a team, quality of work, and adherence to project timelines is obviously important in all professions.
